Precepts (Uposatha Practice)

Aṭṭhaṅga-samannāgata Uposatha

1

I undertake the precept to abstain from killing living beings.

Pāṇātipātā veramaṇī sikkhāpadaṃ samādiyāmi.

I undertake the precept to abstain from taking what is not given.

Adinnādānā veramaṇī sikkhāpadaṃ samādiyāmi.

I undertake the precept to refrain from sexual intercourse.

Abrahmacariyā micchācārā veramaṇī sikkhāpadaṃ samādiyāmi.

I undertake the precept to abstain from false speech.

Musāvādā veramaṇī sikkhāpadaṃ samādiyāmi.

I undertake the precept to abstain from liquor, wine, and intoxicants, which are a basis for heedlessness.

Surāmeraya-majja-pamādaṭṭhānā veramaṇī sikkhāpadaṃ samādiyāmi.

I undertake the precept to to refrain from eating after noon and before dawn.

Vikālabhojanā veramaṇī sikkhāpadaṃ samādiyāmi.

I undertake the precept to abstain from dancing, singing, music, watching shows, wearing garlands, beautifying myself with perfumes and cosmetics.

Naccagītavāditavisūkadassanāmālāgandhavilepanadhāraṇamaṇḍanavibhūsanaṭṭhānā veramaṇī sikkhāpadaṃ samādiyāmi.

I undertake the precept to abstain from high and luxurious seats and beds.

Uccāsayanamahāsayanā veramaṇī sikkhāpadaṃ samādiyāmi.
